F.A.Q. What's so great about pocket diapers? TOP
I love pocket diapers for many reasons!!!
- Ease of use- Ella's Pockets use Aplix brand closures. With this type of closure, our diapers go on and off like a disposable!
- Ease of cleaning- Ella's Pockets are lined with microfleece. Messes are easily cleaned from this wonderfully soft fabric, and since it is polyester, it does not stain! Just watch out for natural soaps, they can leave a residue on the fleece and create repelling issues.
- Quick Dry- With just 2 layers of fabric on the entire shell, pocket diapers dry super fast!
- Simplicity- Just "stuff" and go! No cover required!
- Fit- Elastic around both layers of the back diaper and through the leg openings insures a snug, trim fit.
- You control the level of absorbency yourself with what you choose to "stuff" your diaper with. No need for super bulky diapers when it is not necessary!
- And last, but not least- Heck, they're just cute!!!
How many pocket diapers do I need? TOP
If you are using pockets exclusively, I'd recommend having enough to wash every other day. Personally, we used about 12 per day when Ella was tiny, slowing decreasing as she got older. She is just over 2 years old now, and we go through about 6 diapers per day.
My insert seems really long. Why? TOP
Ella's inserts are sewn using Hemp/Cotton fleece. This fabric shrinks considerably, so I have compensated by extending the length a bit on some of the sizes. It will shrink down to normal size, and fluff up, after 3-4 HOT washes.
Also, there are only 2 sizes of inserts. If you have a Small diaper, and you are using the Small/Medium insert, then it is going to seem bigger in the Small and smaller in the Medium.
My inserts seem short. Why? TOP
Ella's inserts are now being sewn in only 2 sizes, one size to accomodate the Small and Medium pockets, and one for Large & XL.
Pocket inserts do NOT need to fill the entire pocket to work. I know this is not what is recommended by other manufacturers, but I have tested this over and over on my own baby, and I have found it to be definitely true. When Ella was in a Large diaper, I found myself still stuffing the pockets with the same 'ole Small insert I had made a year or 2 before.
Remember, though, if you have a boy and your insert does not fit completely, be sure to place it more towards the front of the diaper!
Can I use Ella's Pockets at nighttime? TOP
Honestly, it depends. Most folks can add a little extra "stuffing" to the pocket and make it through the night if using the polyester, solid color diapers. Cotton prints are NOT suitable for nighttime diapering as they wick through at the legs much faster than the solid diapers. I have had some success with a few Polyester woven prints, but again, those are questionble for nighttime as well. When using PUL at night, your best bet is to stick with solid colored polyester knit PUL and double-stuff with extra inserts or prefolds.
Some of my retailers offer fleece Ella's made from Malden Mills WindPro fleece- these babies can stand up to even the heaviest wetter! Ella herself is a super heavy wetter at nighttime, and these have always been able to hold up at night without leaks.
What else can I "stuff" my pocket with? TOP
All Ella's Diapers come with a Hemp/Cotton fleece insert, but you can also use: Prefolds, microterry towels, and any of the other brands of pocket inserts on the market.
How long will pocket diapers last? TOP
Pocket Diapers can last through multiple children. The PUL (polyurethane laminate) applied to the fabric that keeps it waterproof will not last forever, though. If you find that your PUL seems to wick or leak after many months (or it could take years depending on how you use/treat your diapers), there are several products on the market that you can use to correct this. My personal favorite is a product called Permanent Water Guard by Atsko. It is sprayed on the outside of the fabric, allowed to dry, and then activated in the dryer on hot.
Another way to prolong your diaper-life is to line dry your diapers. If they feel stiff afterwards, just toss in the dryer for a few minutes to soften.
My diapers are wicking at the legs. Why? TOP
If you experience wicking, these are the most probable causes:
1. Insert- have you washed it a few times yet? Ella's Inserts are made from Hemp/Cotton Fleece. Hemp contains a natural oil that needs to be stripped from the fabric to increase absorbency. 3-4 washings should get your inserts to their maximum potential. Personally, I like to use new diapers right away, and I hate the thought of having to waste all that water and energy just to "prep" a diaper! I use mine right away with the knowledge that there may be a little wicking the first few times.
2. "Sealing" the PUL: When diapers with PUL are sewn, small needleholes are put in the fabric. Washing and Drying in hot, hot water is a good way to seal the laminate back around these holes and reduce wicking.
3. Fit: Did you get the right size? Are they gaping any at the legs? The microfleece needs to roll to the outside of the diaper. If the Polyester layer gets rolled into the diaper, it could pick up some of the moisture and bring it to the outside.
4. And the most heartbreaking of all: Some diapers just don't work with some kids. I have first-hand experience in this one :( I developed Ella's Pockets to fit my 3rd child (Ella). When my son was born, the fit was horrible!!! They had very different body shapes as newborns, and what worked for one did not work for the other. Does this mean Ella's Pockets will never work for your child? NO! Now that my son is bigger, we are able to use a larger size which fits his body shape just fine :)
